"Juliet, Naked" incredibly and intelligently shows the story about seven kinds of love according to the ancient Greek culture. There is "eros" throughout the film, which imbues the characters and some of the lyrics. However, this feeling is expressed aesthetically and tastefully. The main character Tucker (amazingly played by Ethan Hawke) reflects most types of love: "philautia" - love of self, "ludus" - playful love, and, of course, "eros". But Tucker lacks feeling of love for children, dramatically portrayed in the heartbreaking scene when he abandons his little baby in the sink. Also, he never mentions or dedicates any of his songs to his numerous children. Only the girlfriends he abandons have the ability to express "storge" - love of the child. Professor Duncan (Chris O'Dowd) and art expert Annie (Rose Byrne) represent people of intellectual accomplishments and the aspect "philia" - love of the mind. At the end of the movie Tucker meets Annie and finally experiences "agape" and "pragma" - love of the soul and eternal love, expressed beautifully in his new evocative songs. This movie demonstrates an exquisite way in which people can express all shades of love.

A mix of funny and dramatical movie. It has a good story, and the characters are interesting. The best part is the evolution of the charscter of her. Positive and empowering.
As "Juliet, Naked" (2018 release; 100 min.) opens, we see Duncan address us on the Tucker Crowe fan site that he runs. Crowe used to be a a Jeff Buckley-type singer-songwriter who abruptly left the music scene after releasing his "Juliet" album in 1993, never to be seen or heard from again. Duncan's girlfriend Annie isn't nearly as enamored with it all. Then one day, an envelope arrives for Duncan: someone has unearthed the demo sessions for the "Juliet" album, and calls them "Juliet, Naked". Duncan cannot believe his great fortune and places a glowing review on the fan site. Annie, just to annoy Duncan, also places a review that trashes the demos. And wouldn't you know, out of the blue she gets an email from the real Tucker Crowe, who agrees with her poor review... At this point we're less than 15 min. into the movie but to tell you more of the plot would spoil your viewing experience, you'll just have to see for yourself how it all plays out.
Couple of comments: this is the latest Nick Hornby book to get the big screen treatment, directed by Jesse Peretz (of the HBO series "Girls"). I have not read the book, so I can't comment how faithful the movie remains to the book. The movie is rom-com all the way, and at times reminded me of "You've Got Mail" and "Notting Hill". When bringing this type of rom-com, you better have charming lead performers, and on that level the movie hits a home run. Rose Byrne (as Annie) and Ethan Hawke (as Crowe) are absolutely delightful, as is Chris O'Dowd as (Duncan). Adding to the enjoyment is that much is brought with a wink and a smike, turning this into an outright feel-good movie. As one can imagine, there is a ton of great music in the film. The original Tucker Crowe songs are written by Nathan Larson, and yes, Ethan Hawke does all the lead vocals. There re a bunch of other song placements throughout the film.
"Juliet, Naked" premiered at this year's Sundance film festival to positive buzz. The film opened in August, but only this weekend did it finally open at my local art-house theater here in Cincinnati. The Saturday early evening screening where I saw this at was attended nicely (about 25 people), and you could tell that the audience was really enjoying this movie. If you are in the mood for a rom-com that oozes charm and great music, I'd readily suggest you check it out, be it in the theater, on Amazon Instant Video, or eventually on DVD/Blu-ray, and draw your own conclusion.
